Why Pursue An MBA?

Why Pursue An MBA?

What should a counselor think when he or she hears a students ask, “Why pursue an MBA?” Should the counselor look at that student as a young adult in a state of confusion? No, because those who ask that question often display a marked degree of ambition. Those who pursue an MBA need to invest heavily in time and money. They need assurances that their investment will pay-off. Typically, those who have considered going after an MBA have already excelled in some field, but have not yet attained a leadership spot in that field. Acquisition of a MBA can help a hard-working employee to obtain a leadership spot in an organization.

In the past, the majority of MBA programs followed a “generalist” system. The coursework in such programs covered the basics in a diverse group of business-related topics. Some students continue to enter an MBA program with the intention of taking the courses expected of someone in a “generalist” system.

Still, a growing number of students have found a different answer to that important question: “Why pursue an MBA?” Those students were intent on developing specific skills. Such students generated the drive for revision of MBA programs. More and more schools have created MBA programs for students whose special needs demanded attention.

What were those special needs, and how did they relate to the overall question, i.e. why pursue an MBA? Those special needs related to the students’ desire to learn special skills. They wanted skills that would help them to advance in a particular field. The desire for skills had become the primary answer to the question “Why pursue an MBA?”

Some students entered an MBA program with their focus on the acquisition of all manner of financial studies. Such students planned to work in the area of insurance. They hoped to follow a career path in the area of investment banking. A few students gave thought to the idea of becoming consultants, sharing with others their knowledge of specific financial markets.

Not every student who began an MBA program longed to become a CEO. Yet many MBA students did have that ambition. For them the question “Why pursue an MBA?” seemed best-answered by enrollment in a school that offered an Executive MBA.

Today students who hope to complete the program of studies that puts a student on a path towards an Executive MBA should know that there are sub-specialties within that area of specialization. A student who has a strong background in information technology might choose to pursue a Techno-Executive MBA. A student who has taken a number of science courses might consider going-after a Physicians Executive MBA.

A student who plans to enter any MBA program should realize that the time spent in that program represents an investment. It should be a wise investment. Not every MBA student dreams about occupying an executive suite. Some MBA students hope to become skilled managers.

By entering an MBA program, a student can better discover the area of management in which he or she feels most comfortable. Some students would not hesitate to take courses in Vendor Development. Other students would prefer to concentrate their studies on the area of Purchase Management or Inventory Management.

Some schools even have courses on sports management. Such courses add to the many reasons that counselors might offer when presented with the question “Why pursue an MBA?”
